artist's statement
updated march 25, 2008

i am a self taught artist and have always liked to work fast. working primarily in acrylics i have had to learn to do so, or risk losing the moment to...well, dry paint. but acrylics were just the medium i learned to paint with and have stayed with them even after being frustrated for many years with the results. over the years though, i have learned to accomplish what i want with acrylics and haven't felt the need to change. i like to use vibrant colors and produce stark contrasts that pull you in and make you say "wow" and upon opening my portfolio, that's exactly what many people do say. i experiment with various different techniques and subject matters and continually test my ability to play with light, shadow abstract expressionism, impressionism, realism and surrealism. major influences of mine include salvador dali, i especially enjoy the optical illusions that were many times embedded in his work (surrealism in general has always inspired me). also high on the list, chuck close, his is an amazing journey from huge intricate realistic portraits to his later more abstract but no less amazing works. i always much admired al hirschfeld, the only true master or caricature. of course monet, van gogh and too many others to mention.

i have never locked myself into a single "style". recently i decided to call my work purely intuitive but with my latest endeavors i need to ad "pop" to that label let's try "neo-pop intuitive, surrealist, abstract...whatever". anyways i says (chicago accent), my artistic process is always evolving and will be indefinitely (so there).

below is one of my very early works (early 1980's). it's a true example of everything i love about painting. it represents mystery, fantasy, abstract vision, mutiple dimensions, and exploration of the unknown. it has recently been called genius by someone who i didn't ask if i could use there quote (i may reveal that info at a later date).

thank you for your interest, enjoy.
